Provides basic necessities and help those in crisis find the path to self-sufficiency. When available, food, clothing and household vouchers, and rent and utility assistance may be offered. Does not provide assistance with security deposits.

DCFS has the primary responsibility of protecting children and strengthening families through the investigation and intervention of suspected child abuse or neglect by parents and other caregivers.

DCFS links families with community services to address struggles families are having, offers preventative services to referred families in an attempt to keep family units together to address findings of abuse/neglect, and works with families who have children under the legal custody of DCFS while working to reunify families when possible or provide a permanent home for children.

As part of its duties, DCFS also licenses and monitors all Illinois child welfare agencies, child care agencies, domestic and international adoption providers, and group homes in the state.

Offers vaccines and information for individuals in need to answer questions, or misinformation about certain vaccines. Services include flu vaccines, COVID-19 vaccines, and other vaccines may be offered under this program. 

Provides programs for after school and summer. 

Provides monthly financial assistance to persons who do not have adequate income or resources to provide for their own basic needs. To qualify, the individual must meet certain financial and residential criteria, and not be eligible for any other state or federal assistance programs.

Provides emergency general relief, including rent and utility assistance, medical expense assistance and food vouchers when available. Also helps with Veteran benefits, Veteran Compensation and Pension Benefits and burial benefits. This service is offered to legal residents, indigent individuals, honorably discharged Veterans, their spouses, widows, and dependent children.

Provides substance abuse/drug prevention education to schools, community groups and businesses. The programs include presentations on alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, peer helper training, conflict management training, and consultation on substance abuse issues. Programs are centered around healthy lifestyles and healthy choices. Mentoring program is also available.

Provides public health nursing services. Services include adult health maintenance services for medically needy individuals, home health aides, personal care, homemaker services, adult immunizations, foot care clinics, and communicable disease follow-up.

Provides financial assistance for utility bills. 

Transportation to medical appointments for needy veterans through the Disabled American Veterans.

Offers employment services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Individuals participating in the vocational program receive job skill education and assessment, job coaching and pre-vocational services as needed. 

Offers a food pantry that is available to area residents. Can access once per month. Perry County residents may also receive additional food from the monthly Mobile Market.
