Programs available:

- Multi-Family Housing Programs: Loans for affordable rental housing for very-low- to moderate-income residents, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Funds may also be used to buy or improve land and provide necessary facilities such as water and waste disposal systems. Rent assistance is available for rural residents.

- Community Facilities Programs: Loans, grants, and loan guarantees for essential community facilities in rural areas, with priority given to health care, education, and public safety projects.

- Business Financing Programs: Financial support, including loans and grants, for individuals or groups seeking to establish or expand businesses in rural areas.

Provides government services to the city of Newton.

Provides education and training in approved training programs in local community colleges. Can help with the cost of tuition, books, fees, required tools, and any additional items required by the program. Program also provides a work experience and on-the-job training component. 

Work Experience offers subsidizes wages at a local employer for 1 to 6 months to help customer gain experience to gain permanent employment.

On-The-Job Training offers subsidizes half of hourly wage for a set period of time at a local employer with the intention of the employer retaining the customer after training is complete.

Offers a multidisciplinary team to provide behavioral health care, including services from Psychiatrists, Pharmacists, Social Workers, Chemical Dependency Counselors, and other support care persons. Services may include inpatient mental health care for individuals with acute psychiatric disorders who require hospitalization, either voluntarily or involuntarily, to ensure safety and stabilization. The program aims to prepare individuals for a return to the community by facilitating ongoing treatment, supporting family members in coping with the illness, and arranging additional supportive services as needed.

Offers SERVSAFE® classes for food service professionals, providing comprehensive training on food hazards, proper food handling practices, and regulatory requirements to ensure food safety and prevent foodborne-illness outbreaks. 

Provides community living services to adults in their own homes, both hourly and residential. Support services are individualized for each person. Some common areas of support and skill development include: self-care, daily living skills, community skills, social skills, community skills, medication setup and follow through.

Provides a variety of services for children and families in order to support and facilitate recovery for mental illness, trauma, disruptive behavior disorders, family relationship problems, and school issues. Services include individual therapy, family therapy, parenting education and skill building, group therapy, consultation to schools and other agencies and psychiatric services.

Offers voluntary programs to eligible landowners and agricultural producers to provide financial and technical assistance to help manage natural resources in a sustainable manner. Through these programs the agency approves contracts to provide financial assistance to help plan and implement conservation practices that address natural resource concerns or opportunities to help save energy, improve soil, water, plant, air, animal and related resources on agricultural lands and non-industrial private forest land, with emphasis on market stability and commodity pricing.

These programs provide living options that center on participants achieving self-sufficiency. YSS advocates work one-on-one with the participants to create a plan to acquire safe and secure housing, stable employment, and financial stability. Programs include: Transitional Living Program (Ames, Boone, Marshalltown) - Single individuals ages 16-21 Rapid Rehousing (Ames, Boone, Des Moines, Marshalltown) - Single individuals ages 18-24 Lighthouse (Boone, Des Moines) - Families with parents ages 16-24 Tenant-Based Rental Assistance (Des Moines) - Single individuals or families ages 18-24 based on income

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) offers free tax preparation and electronic filing for low- to moderate-income Iowans, starting February 2026. Certified community volunteers prepare taxes with computer software and help with special tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or Disabled. 2026 Extension Supported VITA Locations

Medicaid will pay the costs of Health care, Dental care, In-home health care, Nursing facility care or Residential facility care.
